Helen's trust in her older husband Paul is shaken when a letter arrives from a man claiming to be his son. The charming Simon visits and immediately challenges Helen's marital contentment. She succumbs to his advances unaware they're made from a desire for vengeance. Helen guiltily turns her back to Paul as Simon realizes he loves her but she might never trust him. Deeply depressed, Paul attacks his son bringing a final end to his marriage. Helen leaves with Simon and they all find a way to live with the consequences of the past while moving forward with their new lives.
