Annotation

This is a study of the role of regions in the development of modern nations in Latin America. Eduardo Posada-Carbo focuses on the Colombian Caribbean between 1870 and 1950. He examines the achievements and shortcomings of arable agriculture and the significance of the livestock industry, the links between town and countryside, the influence of foreign migrants and foreign capital, the relationship between local and national politics, and the extent to which regionalism represented a challenge to the consolidation of the national state in Colombia. This original study opens up the area to scholarly scrutiny, and has wider implications for Latin American historiography.

Review
This is a monograph in the best sense of the term - detailed in its exploration but narrow in neither ist focus nor its style... an essential book for those interested in Colombian history, but it will provide benefit to anybody engaged with the social history of Latin America. The maps are very good and useful. Tesserae The book is comprehensive in its topical scope and factually detailed, yet remarkably concise. It is hard to imagine anyone trying to cover the same ground again in the foreseeable future. David Bushnell, University of Florida, Bull. Latin Am. Res., Vol. 16, No. 12 1997 any reader should be grateful for the breadth and enthusiasm of the undertaking ... Surely this book exemplifies an encouraging contribution to Colombian regional historiography. Marco Palacios, Latin American Studies, Vol. 29, 1997
