This thesis serves as an examination of the process of creating and performing the role of Sister Aloysius Beauvier in the University of Arkansas' 2007 main stage production of John Patrick Shanley's play, Doubt , directed by Amy Herzberg. The body of the thesis explores and interprets Shanley's text and examines the circumstances of the time period in which the play's action occurs. The thesis also speaks to the play's theme and meaning, with specific reference to how the character of Sister Aloysius functions in the text. Also included are specific acting choices, such as objectives and catalyst moments, as well as a journal detailing the actor's rehearsal and production processes. Hopefully this thesis will assist any actor or director preparing to work on John Patrick Shanley's play.
