In an old family inn in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, three women join together to form the Meryl Streep Movie Club, finding unexpected answers and inspiration as they each confront a tough situation in their lives Isabel supposedly lives her dream life in Greenwich, Connecticut: the fancy house, the handsome attorney husband, and all the fancy trimmings. But what she really wants is to reconnect with her husband, Edward, who barely speaks to her anymore. When Isabel finds out that he's been having an affair, she realizes that her semblance of a perfect life has finally crumbled. Single mother of a seven-year-old boy, Isabel's younger sister June is a former high school valedictorian who got knocked up at age 21 on a two-night stand, dropped out of Columbia and moved to Portland, Maine, where she lives above the independent bookstore that she manages. But when her boss tells her that they're closing the store and have to give up the apartments too, June is devastated. She's lost her job, her home, and her sense of security.
To make matters worse: her son is becoming increasingly insistant about meeting her father—who has been missing-in-action for years—and June has vowed to track him down. Isabel and June's cousin Kat, a baker who has never left her native Boothbay Harbor, has just found out that her mother, Lolly, has ovarian cancer, and is so shocked by the news that she accepts her longtime on-again/off-again boyfriend's marriage proposal, despite feeling deeply ambivalent.. When Lolly brings Isabel, June, and Kat together at the Three Captains Inn and invites them to attend her movie club's Meryl Streep Month, the three women expect only a few hours of distraction from their tumultuous lives. But what follows changes everyone's lives...
