1815 : Europe is recovering from the Revolutionary wars and Napoleon is imprisoned on the island of Elba. Edward Lacey sails to Simon's Bay in the Cape Colony with his only daughter Charlotte, to assume his duties as Commander-in-Chief of the Cape of Good Hope Squadron of the Royal Navy. Charlotte, who has refused all offers of marriage in London, is excited by the prospect of freedom in the new colony. Ellen, who accompanies the Laceys, is Charlotte's lady's maid as well as her closest friend. Shortly after they have settled into Admiralty House in Simon's Town, John du Rand, Charlotte's handsome cousin, an officer in the Royal Navy, arrives on his ship. He and Charlotte fall rapidly in love and John proposes against the dramatic background of Cape Point. But is John all that he appears to be? Meanwhile Ellen engages in a clandestine relationship with Sam, the illegitimate son of a Dutch burgher and a slave. Tragedy overtakes this couple which unearths a long hidden Lacey family secret. Charlotte finds herself alone in trying to loosen this tangled web of problems. Help comes from an unexpected quarter in the form of Paul le Roux, the son of a Huguenot wine estate owner in the Franschhoek Valley. But things do not work out in the way that Charlotte expects and she is launched on her personal journey of self discovery...
