Help: Searching for Items

Basic search

The search bar is displayed prominently across the top of most page of our website. This is usually the easiest way to find what you're looking for.

To perform a basic search, simply enter your search terms and press the GO button.

Depending on what you're looking for, you can try a number of different kinds of search terms, including:

Title, Author, Brand, Subject, Keywords

Enter any of the above (e.g. "Harry Potter", "Car Seat", "Baby Bjorn, "Stephen King", "Biology", "Manga") and our search engine will trawl our product database for appropriate matches.

The order in which the results are displayed will be based on a number of criteria, including relevance and popularity. You can also refine your search.

Book Searches: ISBN and EAN numbers
If you already know the ISBN or EAN of the item you're looking for, searching by this will usually be the fastest way to find it.

ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers) are the book industry's standard product identifiers. A book's ISBN number consists of a string of digits that identifies the specific edition of the book. There are two different kinds of ISBN: the old 10-digit numbers (ISBN-10) and the current 13-digit ones (ISBN-13). Our search bar will accept either format.

For example, the ISBN numbers for one specific edition of Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone (the Bloomsbury UK paperback edition) are as follows:

ISBN-13: 9780747558194
ISBN-10 (old format): 0747558191

A book's ISBN number is usually printed on its cover, near the bar code. It can also be found inside, on the copyright page.

EANs (European Article Numbers) are the product identifiers used for most retail products in Australia. EANs are 13 digits long and can be found printed by the barcode on the item or its packaging.

In the case of books, the same number is used for both the ISBN-13 and the EAN. For example, the EAN of the Harry Potter book above is also 9780747558194.

Refining your search

In the page that loads with your search results, a grey Refine Search box will appear to the left.

This box allows you to limit the results further, so that only those meeting certain criteria (eg, format, category, publication year) will appear.

For example, if you perform a search for the words "Stieg Larsson", the results can then be limited to a certain format (paperback, hardcover or compact disc), publication year (2010, 2009, 2008 or 2006) or category (Crime & Mystery, Modern & Contemporary Fiction or Thriller/Suspense). Alternatively, if you search for "car seat", you can refine by the different brands (Safety 1st, Britax etc).
