Using the same practical and user-friendly format as the first edition, Buron and Curtis let readers benefit from work done with the scales over the past 10 years, to result in refinements to the original scales, now considered “classics” in homes and classrooms across the country and abroad, as well as lots of new scales specifically designed for two groups of individuals: young children and those with more classic presentations of autism, including expanded use of the Anxiety Curve. Another welcome addition is a list of goals and objectives related to incorporating scales in students’ IEPs. Blank scales, small portable scales and worksheets for easy duplication are available at

As in their other writings, the authors emphasise the importance self-management and self-regulation, two evidence-based practices.

Critic Reviews

“"If you want to teach a child social and interpersonal abilities and emotional self-control, this book will become your primary resource in the classroom and at home. The strategies are simple, clear, flexible and fun, and are based on the authors' increasing practical experience." -- Tony Attwood, PhD, Director "The Minds and Hearts Clinic, Brisbane, Australia"”

A must if you work with intense students - FIVE STARS

This is a program that delivers. It is a great way to provide instruction, monitoring and goal tracking for students on IEP's. It helps any student with behavioral issues at home, in the community, or in the classroom. My only disappointment was that the forms on the CD are not customizable. You can print them and fill them out by hand or recreate the form from scratch.

"The five-point scale is something that should be used in every elementary classroom especially if that class includes special needs children. It gives everyone a visual way to judge their behavior."

"Dunn Buron and Curtis'' The Incredible 5-Point Scale is an excellent tool to weave into a social regulation curriculum. This new, revised, very practical book, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy, expands on the core idea of the original scale by providing current clinical examples of how to use the scale across different age groups and functioning levels ... This is a must-have for any parent or professional working with someone who is learning to control his or her own behaviors."
