Publisher Description

Hitching rides is an unreliable mode of transport. In temperatures of over a hundred degrees, you're lucky if a driver will open the door of his airconditioned car long enough to let you slide you in. That's Jack Reacher's conclusion. He's adrift in the fearsome heat of a Texas summer, and he needs to keep moving through the wide open vastness, like a shark in the water. The last thing he's worried about is exactly who picks him up. He never expected it to be somebody like Carmen. She's alone, driving a Cadillac. She's beautiful, young and rich. She has a little girl who is being watched by unseen observers. And a husband who is in jail. Who will beat her senseless when he comes out. If he doesn't kill her first. Reacher is no stranger to trouble. And at Carmen's remote ranch in Echo County there is plenty of it: lies and prejudice, hatred and murder. Reacher can never resist a lady in distress. Her family is hostile. The cops can't be trusted. The lawyers won't help. If Reacher can't set things straight, who can?

Back Cover

Jack Reacher - six foot five and dangerous. Adrift in the hellish heat of Texas. Moving like a shark in the water. Looking for a lift through the vast empty landscape. A Cadillac stops. A ride, but with a hitch. A pretty young woman, alone. Her husband's in jail. When he comes out, he's going to kill her. Her family's hostile, she can't trust the cops, and lawyers won't help. Reacher is her last option. Will this be the first time he says no - to a lady in distress?

Review

'Big, bruising actioner...Child's great strength lies in spelling out exactly how explosive things are made to happen...Cathartic stuff, expertly delivered' Literary Review 'If you like thrillers of the bang-wallop variety, with a nice bit of plotting thrown in, this is the one for you' Irish Times 'Plenty of twists and plenty of excitement...another real page-turner' Sunday Telegraph 'Reacher is a hero in the old Wild West stle: a fearless and capable loner, who lives by his own set of morals and is proud never to have killed a man who didn't deserve it...The author is in complete control of his complicated plot and has produced another real pageturner' -- Susanna Yager Sunday Telegraph 'In the space of less than five years, Child has established himself as one of Britain's most successful commercial novelists...Complete with crackling fast dialogue, an edgy ambivalent plot, and the capacity to make his readers turn the page, this feels like Child's breakthrough book into the mega-sellers. He is that good.' -- Geoffrey Wansell Daily Mail

Kirkus UK Review

Since Child began his series of gritty, involving thrillers such as Killing Floor, Die Trying and Tripwire, he has slowly built a reputation as one of the most reliable practitioners of the genre. The authenticity of the US setting in books is doubly impressive given that Child is English. That authenticity extends to the characters, perfectly realized against a menacing American landscape, and his hero Jack Reacher has inexorably become one of the most distinctive protagonists around. This time, Reacher is grimly enduring the intense heat of a Texas summer, and has decided to find what fate has to offer in other towns. He's not too concerned about who will pick him up when he hitches a ride. It turns out to be a seductive young woman, obviously wealthy, driving a Cadillac. The girl, Carmen, tells him she has a little daughter who is being pursued by sinister, unidentified men. And her abusive husband is in jail, and likely to kill her when he gets out. So it's a bad idea for Jack to travel to Carmen's lonely ranch in Echo County and get mixed up in her troubles, but (of course) that's just what he does. And before long he's up against deception, violence and some dangerous sexual situations, with crooked cops and shifty lawyers making his life even more complicated. This novel exerts its grip within pages, and Child's ex-military cop hero is as winning as ever - even if he continues to show bad judgment. Another winner from an accomplished author. (Kirkus UK)
