Shannon's Guide to Off Campus

Author:  Shannon McDonnell

If you’ve been living under a rock, the name Off Campus might not mean anything to you, but in the year of the Heated Rivalry craze, we’ve had our second hockey romance resurgence, bringing to the forefront a long ago published series of sweet, spicy romance novels that have been adapted for the screen.

Amazon Prime launched Off Campus Season 1 last week, and if you aren’t the Elle Kennedy fan I am, you might not know the lore, the order, the differences from book-to-screen, and that’s okay! Because I am here to give you -

SHANNON'S GUIDE TO OFF CAMPUS

The Briar U multiverse is layered, and spans over a decade since The Deal (the first book in the Off Campus series) was published. Since then we have two spin-off series’ and a standalone to bring us the new generations of Hastings kids.

Strap in - I’m going to break it all down for you.

The original series has four main books, along with a novella to close it out, bringing our four main couples stories to a close (or so we think).

First - The Deal with Hannah Wells “Wellsy” and Garrett Graham. If you’ve watched the show already, you will be the most familiar with these two lovebirds, who agree to a public fake dating farce to make Hannah’s crush, Justin jealous (though in the book, he’s on the football team - and not Australian), and to get Garrett’s grades where they need to be.

Second - The Mistake, John Logan (known as Logan throughout, due to his name-share John Tucker) and Grace Ivers. We’re yet to meet Ivers in the show, but we recently learned India Fowler will play the role on screen in future seasons. Grace and Logan meet when she’s a freshman, and when he’s still trying to get over Hannah. After a chance encounter gone wrong, they take the summer to deal with their personal lives, and when they return, Logan becomes more adamant that he made a mistake in the way things unfolded the previous school year. Logan’s family is complicated (an interesting turn given his brother was his right hand man in the book, and his dad had some issues, but in the show we’ve been introduced to Jules, and his mum is in rehab).

Third - The Score, but we’re all already way too acquainted with Allie Hayes and Dean DiLaurentis to think the TV Show is going to remain 100% true to the plot of the book, but if you’re exploring the series for the first time, I’ll tell you this much. After Allie and Sean break up, Allie and Dean might accidentally fall into bed together, which naturally makes Dean mad for her (can you blame the guy?). We then learn a tonne about his past, and some really awful things happen - no spoilers. It’s definitely my favourite book though, so make sure you don’t miss this one.

Finally (kind of) -  The Goal where we meet Sabrina James, and finally Tucker (comma John) gets his happy ending! Or does he get his life turned upside down? Kind of both. A night of pleasure, a surprise pregnancy, and John’s taking daddy to a whole new level. Sabrina is a super smart, sassy law student who just needs a little bit of convincing to allow any man to save her. Tuck is our wholesome king, and the last one we expected to see in this situation, but we love watching him figure it out (especially when donning an apron).

Then, a few years later Elle Kennedy gave us the short and sweet novella - The Legacy, where we get four extra epilogues of each of our lovesick couples, in a ‘where are they now’ style. But we do also get to see the way the friendships have developed within the group, and the sweet moments between the guys and the girls. It’s also not just ‘they all lived happily ever after’ immediately. We get to see them continue to work through their real lives, relationships and what happens after graduation. A sweet conclusion to a wild ride that is the stories of these college kids.

My Guide to The Original Series

Now, if all that wasn’t enough - their stories don’t quite end there. Not only did Elle Kennedy go on to write the Briar U series, with a whole new gaggle of young adults figuring it all out, as well as some familiar faces from Off Campus (books & show)

Briar U Books

1 - The Chase: Colin Fitzgerald & Summer Di-Laurentis (Yep, Dean’s sister)

2 - The Risk: Jake Connelly & Brenna Jensen (Coach’s daughter!)

3 - The Play: Demi Davis & Hunter Davenport (Hmm, he sounds familiar…)

4 - The Dare: Taylor Marsh & Conor Edwards (Hunter’s friend)

Briar U Series

She then continued our original characters' lore with the second generation of Off Campus with The Campus Diaries. Bringing us three new (and in my opinion, fantastic) books to fall in love with.

1 - The Graham Effect: Luke Ryder & Gigi Graham (Spoiler, one of Garrett & Hannah’s twins)

2 - The Dixon Rule: Shane Lindley & Diana Dixon (Gigi’s bestie)

3 - The Charlie Method: Charlotte Kingston, Will Larsen & Beckett Dunne (Why choose!?)

And most recently, Elle Kennedy released Love Song, a sweet standalone bringing together all our favourite Off Campus characters (in their ‘I have adult children era) and following Blake Logan (John & Grace’s daughter) & Wyatt Graham (the other Graham twin) as they try and find themselves at the summer house, bankrolled by the rich hockey players that came before them.

*Deep exhale* Did you catch all that? If not, you can check out the full collection at The Nile today, I recommend biting the bullet and buying the whole collection. It’s kept me invested for years and I yearn for more. I’m thrilled that an author like Elle Kennedy is getting the commercial success she deserves.

Happy Reading!
