Toby Clements was inspired to write Kingmaker: Winter Pilgrims after becoming obsessed with the Wars of the Roses following a school trip to Tewkesbury Abbey. He has since dedicated himself to learning about the period, from re-enacting battles to mastering historical survival skills. Clements became particularly fascinated by the lives of ordinary people in the 15th Century – their resilience, resourcefulness, and tenacity. Winter Pilgrims is a tribute to them. He lives in London with his wife and three children.
