Thomas Browne

Sir Thomas Browne (1605-82) was an English polymath and author of varied works which reveal his wide learning in diverse fields including science and medicine, religion and the esoteric. Browne’s writings are characterised by a deep curiosity towards the natural world, and are permeated by his Christian faith. His literary style is notable for its originality and complexity, combining erudite vocabulary with a poetic sensibility. His most famous works include Religio Medici (The Religion of a Doctor), Pseudodoxia Epidemica (Enquiries into Vulgar Errors), and Hydriotaphia, Urn Burial. He practiced medicine in Norwich for most of his adult life, and was knighted by Charles II in 1671.
