Don Freeman
Don Freeman was born on August 11, 1908, in San Diego, California, and passed away in February 1978. Freeman distinguished himself as a painter, newspaper illustrator, cartoonist, lithographer, book illustrator, author, and children’s book author and illustrator.
Don Freeman’s early life was challenging, as he was orphaned at a young age. He graduated from Principia High School in St. Louis, Missouri. Legend has it that one of Don Freeman’s instructors recognized his talent and arranged for the young artist to attend the renowned Art Students League in New York.
Don Freeman was first introduced to children’s literature when William Saroyan commissioned him to illustrate several children’s books. However, his greatest influence came from the artist Honoré Daumier. Freeman studied many of Daumier’s works and possessed an extensive collection of books about the artist.
Throughout his career, Don Freeman authored and illustrated over 20 children’s books. He is best known for his publication “Corduroy.” While many ideas originated from him, his wife, Lydia Freeman, contributed significantly to his success. She co-authored two books with him, including “Chuggy and the Blue Caboose” and “Pet of the Met.” She was highly influential in her husband’s work, serving as a source of inspiration for his creations.
