Eleanor Robson Belmont (1878–1979) was a prominent American actress, socialite, and philanthropist. Born Eleanor Robson in Wigan, England, she achieved fame as a stage actress in the early 20th century before retiring upon her marriage to August Belmont Jr. in 1910. Following her acting career, Belmont dedicated herself to numerous civic and charitable causes, including women’s suffrage, the American Red Cross, and the Metropolitan Opera. She played a crucial role in saving the Metropolitan Opera from financial collapse during the Great Depression and served as the first woman on its board of directors. Belmont’s tireless efforts and dedication to the arts and humanitarian work left a lasting impact on American society.
