Summary

A gritty novel set in Milan’s seedy underbelly, by the father of Italian noir.

One balmy spring evening on the outskirts of Milan, a Fiat with two passengers plunges into a canal. At first, their deaths are registered as an accident. But the suave Duca Lamberti, a doctor-turned-detective, suspects there’s more to it than that. Because that same canal has been the scene of other deaths, and all the incidents have one man in common: a lawyer with a murky past stretching all the way back…

About The Author

Giorgio Scerbanenco

Giorgio Scerbanenco (1911-1969)

Born in Kiev, in what was then the Russian Empire, Giorgio Scerbanenco’s family immigrated to Rome when he was very young. He later moved to Milan at the age of sixteen. Scerbanenco initially wrote romance novels before shifting his focus to crime fiction. He is credited with pioneering a distinctly Italian perspective and style within the genre. Many of his novels were adapted into films. He is most renowned for his “Milan Quartet,” which features the protagonist Duca Lamberti, a doctor who has been struck off the medical register and becomes a detective.
