About The Author
Gaston Leroux
Gaston Leroux was born on 6 May 1868 in Paris. After attending school in Normandy, he returned to Paris to study law. His significant gambling habits are well-documented, having squandered a large inheritance and narrowly avoided bankruptcy.
Leroux began his career as a court reporter and theatre critic before becoming an international correspondent for Le Matin. During this period, he traveled to Russia to cover the Russian Revolution.
In 1907, he transitioned to full-time writing and achieved early success with Le Mystère de la Chambre Jaune (1908). He gained renown for his popular crime and thriller novels, though he also penned poetry and short fiction.
His most famous work, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra (The Phantom of the Opera), was inspired by a visit to the cellars of the Paris Opera and published in 1911. The novel has been adapted into numerous films and a highly successful stage musical.
Gaston Leroux died on 15 April 1927.
