Critics Review

An absolute masterpiece of a book: ingenious, touching, sharp-edged. North is one of the imaginative greats * Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of CHILDREN OF TIME *
A wonderful book, loving, lush, and weird, rich with heartache and horror and grace. It’s a rare treat to read a novel with such scope and depth. A profound accomplishment. I loved it * Max Gladstone, co-author of THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR *
As We Fall Through Time is absolutely, impossibly brilliant: at once epic and intimate, emotionally devastating and intellectually dazzling, everything I love about time travel novels and like nothing I’ve ever read before. I can’t imagine reading a better book this year * H.G. Parry, author of THE MAGICIAN’S DAUGHTER *
Claire North always breaks my brain in the best way possible. Their latest is an utter delight, introducing us to Cal, a gender-bending time traveller who hops centuries with ease, and Olivier, an honour-bound army officer on the cusp of the French Revolution. What begins as a simple love affair becomes a devotion that crosses millennia, invokes a deadly paradox that threatens the entire construct of reality, and draws the attention of a mysterious witch from the cracks of time itself. Casually brilliant, flippantly funny, deeply philosophical, and achingly tender, As We Fall Through Time is one of the best books of the year * Kate Quinn, author of THE ALICE NETWORK *
Claire North dismantles the time-travel saga and rebuilds it as something poignant, propulsive and glorious * M. R. Carey, author of THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS *
Cal, a time traveller from a future where mankind faces extinction of our own making, discovers that other time travellers and the man he loves have disappeared. As We Fall Through Time hurtles along at a relentless pace, snapping back and forth through centuries as Cal tries to locate the origins of the time paradox someone created while trying to save humanity’s future. Claire North’s unparalleled imagination delivers again in this sharply intelligent, mind-bending story filled with plot twists and revelations, incisive commentary on our own era, questions of morality - and love * Janie Chang, bestselling author of THE FOURTH PRINCESS, THE PORCELAIN MOON, THE LIBRARY OF LEGENDS *
North charts a path across time as lyrical and deep and frightening as any winding river in creation. The conventions and logics of the time travel plot are twisted and repurposed, and what you get is an exquisite combination of heartbreak and hilarity, cozy comfort and nightmare thrills. A magnificent read! * Bethany Jacobs, Philip K. Dick Award-winning author of THESE BURNING STARS *
I loved this book and all its layers. Twisting and turning with a serpent’s grace, As We Fall Through Time explores the pleasures, perils and paradoxes of time travel with huge intelligence, compassion and wit. The travellers face dilemmas that are both global and intimate, pressing and timeless. In this tour de force novel, Claire North reminds us - convinces us - that our survival can only come through connection, no matter how unlikely and fraught * Antonia Hodgson, author of THE RAVEN SCHOLAR *
A furious and passionate book, sweeping through an epic scale of history with the fierce drive to find something we can do better, but still intimate and hopeful when it comes to the people who live in the world as it is. Brilliant and memorable * Everina Maxwell, SUNDAY TIMES bestselling author of WINTER’S ORBIT *
Claire North dismantles the time-travel saga and rebuilds it as something poignant, propulsive and glorious * M. R. Carey, author of THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS *
