Summary
Old Babushka, known throughout all of Moskva for her beautifully painted eggs, is preparing her eggs for the Easter Festival when she takes in an injured goose. Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1944. Her early childhood was spent between her grandparents’ farm in Union City, Michigan, and living with her mother and grandparents. This period, particularly her time on the farm and her relationships with her grandparents, deeply influenced her life and her work, often featuring young people interacting with the elderly in her books.
Her parents divorced when she was three, and she split her time between her mother in Coral Gables, Florida, and her father. In 1949, after her grandmother’s death, her family moved to Oakland, California, where she spent most of her formative years. She recalls her neighborhood on Ocean View Drive as a diverse and enriching environment.
Polacco faced significant challenges in school due to dyslexia, struggling with reading and math until she was diagnosed at age fourteen. With the help of a supportive teacher, she learned to overcome these challenges and eventually excelled. This experience reinforced her belief in the potential of learning-disabled individuals.
She pursued higher education, earning an M.F.A. and a Ph.D. in Art History, with a specialization in Russian and Greek painting. She also worked as a museum consultant specializing in the restoration of ancient art.
Polacco began writing children’s books at the age of 41. Her artistic talent, evident from a young age, developed alongside her writing. She credits her family’s rich history of storytelling from Russia, Ukraine, and Ireland, as well as the storytelling traditions of her extended family in Louisiana, as a significant inspiration for her narrative style. She emphasizes the importance of imagination, fostered by a childhood without television, and encourages listening to one’s inner voice.
Having lived in California for many years, she has since returned to Union City, Michigan. She plans to open her home to host writing seminars, storytelling festivals, and other events celebrating children’s literature.
Patricia Polacco is the mother of a son and a daughter and currently resides on an old farm in Michigan.
