Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco was born Patricia Ann Barber in Lansing, Michigan. Her family has Russian, Ukrainian, and Irish roots, and she describes them as marvelous storytellers. Her fondest memories are of listening to elders share stories about their homelands and the past.
Polacco grew up spending school years in Oakland, California, and summers on her grandparents’ farm in Union City, Michigan. She cherishes her childhood on the farm and the influence of her grandparents.
Despite early struggles with reading and math due to dyslexia, Polacco excelled academically after receiving support from a teacher. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in art history, specializing in Russian and Greek painting and iconography. She has worked as a museum consultant on the restoration of icons.
Polacco began writing children’s books at age 41, drawing on her background in the arts and her family’s rich tradition of storytelling. Her writing often features themes of intergenerational relationships and the importance of listening.
She has traveled extensively, particularly in Russia, and supports programs that promote understanding between cultures, as well as U.S. inner-city projects focused on conflict resolution, art, and literacy.
Polacco is a mother to a grown son and daughter. She currently resides in Michigan, on a historic farm, and intends to open her home to host writing seminars, storytelling festivals, and other literary events.
