Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco was born Patricia Ann Barber in Lansing, Michigan, in 1944. Her family on one side was of Russian and Ukrainian descent, and on the other, Irish. She grew up splitting her time between Oakland, California, for the school year, and her beloved Michigan for summers. Her family members were known as marvelous storytellers, and she cherishes memories of listening to them share tales of their homelands and past.
Polacco studied in the United States and Australia, earning an M.F.A. and a Ph.D. in art history, with a specialization in Russian and Greek painting and iconographic history. She has worked as a museum consultant on the restoration of icons. She has also traveled extensively in Russia and other former Soviet republics through citizen exchange programs for writers and illustrators, and continues to support initiatives that foster Russo-American understanding. In the U.S., she is involved in inner-city projects focused on conflict resolution, art, and literacy programs.
She is the mother of a grown son and daughter. Polacco currently resides on an old farm in Michigan, which was built during the time of Lincoln.
Polacco did not begin writing children’s books until she was 41 years old, though her artistic talents have always been a part of her life. She discovered she had a learning disability called dyslexia, which made reading and math challenging in her youth. However, with the help of a supportive teacher, she learned to overcome these obstacles and excelled. This experience deeply influenced her writing, often featuring young characters interacting with elderly individuals, a dynamic she considers one of life’s most valuable experiences.
Her imagination, fueled by a family history of storytelling and a childhood without television, has been the source of her ideas. She emphasizes the importance of listening to one’s inner voice and has plans to open her home in Union City, Michigan, for writing seminars, storytelling festivals, and other events celebrating children’s literature.
