Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850)

After three years of legal training, Honoré de Balzac dedicated himself to writing in 1819. His early works, published under pseudonyms, were primarily hackwork. His first novel published under his own name, La Dernière Chouanne, marked his initial success in 1829. Over the subsequent two decades, Balzac produced an extraordinary volume of work, averaging three to four novels annually, all of which became part of his monumental series, La Comédie Humaine. This series offered a sweeping panorama of French society, with notable contributions including Eugénie Grandet (1833) and Père Goriot (1834). He also penned plays and the popular collection of tales, Contes drôlatiques (1833).

Henry Reed (1914-1986)

Henry Reed was a distinguished poet, translator, and radio playwright. His notable translations include Honoré de Balzac’s Eugénie Grandet and Père Goriot. Reed’s own poetry was collected in two volumes: A Map of Verona and Lessons of the War.

Peter Brooks

Peter Brooks is the author of several influential books, including Reading for the Plot, The Melodramatic Imagination, and Henry James Goes to Paris. He held long-standing professorships in Comparative Literature and French at Yale University and served as University Professor at the University of Virginia.
