James Joyce
James Joyce (1882-1941) was born in Dublin, Ireland, and studied philosophy and languages at the Dublin College of the Royal University. He moved to Paris in 1902 but returned to Dublin in 1903 when his mother fell ill. After her death, he taught school in Dublin and met Nora Barnacle, his lifelong companion.
Joyce and Nora left Ireland in 1904, settling in Trieste where he taught languages at the Berlitz School. A bout of rheumatic fever in 1907 led to a gradual decline in his eyesight throughout his life. With the exception of a single visit to Dublin in 1912, Joyce lived on the Continent for the remainder of his life. Supported by wealthy patrons, he became one of the most influential novelists of the twentieth century.
