About The Author

Lesley Downer

Lesley Downer grew up in a home filled with books on Asia, thanks to her mother being Chinese and her father a professor of Chinese studies. However, it was Japan, rather than China, that captivated her, leading her to live there for fifteen years.

She has authored numerous books exploring Japan and its culture, including “Geisha: The Secret History of a Vanishing World” and “Madame Sadayakko: The Geisha who Seduced the West.” Downer has also presented television programs about Japan for notable broadcasters such as Channel 4, the BBC, and NHK.

Currently residing in London with her husband, the author Arthur I. Miller, she continues to visit Japan annually.
