Gerda Lerner
Gerda Lerner (1920-2013)
Gerda Lerner was a prominent historian, activist, educator, and writer, recognized as one of the founders of women’s history. She earned her PhD in history from Columbia University. Her pioneering work began at Sarah Lawrence College, where she established the first graduate program in women’s history. Later, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she developed the first PhD program in women’s history in the United States.
Lerner served as the editor of Black Women in White America: A Documentary History and authored numerous influential publications, including The Creation of Patriarchy and Why History Matters: Life and Thought.
