About The Author
Shaun Tan
Shaun Tan was born in 1974 and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. He graduated from the University of Western Australia with joint honours in Fine Arts and English Literature.
Tan began drawing and painting images for science fiction and horror stories in small-press magazines as a teenager. He is best known for his illustrated books that explore social, political, and historical subjects through surreal, dream-like imagery. His works, including The Rabbits, The Red Tree, The Lost Thing, and the wordless novel The Arrival, have been widely translated and are enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Tan has also worked as a theatre designer and a concept artist for the films Horton Hears a Who and Pixar’s WALL-E. He directed a short film with Passion Pictures Australia, and his most recently published book is Tales from Outer Suburbia.
In 2011, Tan won the Astrid Lindgren Prize, the world’s richest children’s literature award, with the jury describing him as a “masterly visual storyteller.” His book The Lost Thing was adapted into an animated short film that won an Oscar. He also won the Dromkeen Medal for services to children’s literature in the same year.
