Mel Hurtig

Melvin Hurtig, OC

Melvin Hurtig was a publisher, political activist, and author. In 1956, he opened Hurtig Books in Edmonton, which quickly became a hub for the literary community and one of Canada’s largest retail book businesses.

Hurtig sold his stores in 1972 to focus on publishing Canadian books under the Hurtig Publishers imprint. He was recognized as Canadian Book Publisher of the Year twice, in 1975 and 1981.

His most significant contributions include conceiving and publishing two editions of The Canadian Encyclopedia (1985 and 1988) and the Junior Encyclopedia of Canada (1990). Hurtig Publishers was sold to McClelland & Stewart in 1991.
