Tove Jansson (1914 - 2001)

Tove Jansson was born in Helsinki in 1914 to a family of artists. She would go on to become a celebrated artist, political cartoonist, and author, but she is most widely recognized as the creator of the Moomins, one of the most successful and beloved children’s book series in history.

Inspired by her summers spent on the islands off the coast of Finland and Sweden, Jansson crafted the distinctive world of Moominvalley and its inhabitants. Her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood, was published in 1945. Over the next three decades, Jansson published twelve Moomin books, selling millions of copies and translating them into over forty languages.

In the 1950s, the Moomins transitioned to a successful comic strip, appearing in newspapers globally. As their popularity surged, the Moomins were adapted into television series, plays, films, and a wide range of merchandise.

Beyond the Moomins, Jansson continued to paint throughout her life and authored novels and short stories, including the acclaimed The Summer Book. Yet, the Moomin world remained an integral part of her creative identity, as she famously stated, “You feel a cold wind on your legs when you step outside Moomin Valley.”

In recognition of her significant contributions to children’s literature, Tove Jansson was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1966.
