Mark Gruenwald (1953-1996)

Mark Gruenwald was a writer and editor who significantly influenced Marvel Comics. He is celebrated for his pioneering work on the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and his acclaimed Squadron Supreme series. Gruenwald also wrote over a hundred issues of Captain America, penned multiple sagas for Marvel Two-in-One, and created several miniseries, including Contest of Champions, which was Marvel’s first multi-hero epic. He delved into the Marvel Universe’s ancient history through a series of What If? backup stories, which he also illustrated.

Kieron Dwyer

Kieron Dwyer has been a professional comic book artist since the late 1980s and also works in film, television, books, and advertising. He co-created the animated series Swing Town, taught at the Academy of Art College, and produced storyboards for film and TV projects like Batman Beyond. His artwork was prominently featured in the motion picture Sky High.

Dwyer’s extensive Marvel credits include a long run penciling Captain America, shorter stints on Avengers and Thing, and contributions to titles such as Avengers Spotlight, Classic X-Men, Deadpool/GLI: Summer Fun Spectacular, Solo Avengers, and X-Factor. Beyond Marvel, he has worked on DC projects like Action Comics and Batman, and co-created independent comics including Night Mary, Remains, Last of the Independents, and Sea of Red.

Rich Buckler

Rich Buckler cemented his place in Marvel history by introducing Deathlok in Astonishing Tales. He also penciled several storylines for Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man, and had runs on Jungle Action’s Black Panther, Fantastic Four, and Thor, among other monthly titles. Additionally, he illustrated Roy Thomas’s miniseries Saga of the Sub-Mariner and Saga of the Original Human Torch.

During the 1970s, Buckler’s DC work included Lois Lane, Secret Society of Super-Villains, and World’s Finest, as well as the landmark Superman vs. Shazam. In the 1980s, he collaborated with Thomas on All-Star Squadron. Buckler also worked in the barbarian and horror genres for both Marvel and DC, illustrated Archie’s Mighty Crusaders, and contributed to black-and-white magazines for Marvel and Warren Publishing. He served as editor for the short-lived Solson Publications and authored two books on comic-book art.

Al Milgrom

Al Milgrom, also known as “Editori-Al,” is recognized as a writer, editor, penciler, and inker, holding most of these roles on Spectacular Spider-Man. He also contributed to its companion title, Amazing Spider-Man. Milgrom penciled West Coast Avengers for four years and inked X-Factor for eight. His artwork has been featured in Avengers, Captain America, Thor, and most X-titles, including the classic Kitty Pryde and Wolverine. As an editor, he oversaw Marvel’s Epic imprint and the sixty-issue run of Marvel Fanfare, where his satirical self-portraits became as recognizable as any superhero’s mask. At DC, he co-created Firestorm the Nuclear Man with Gerry Conway.
