Dan Simmons
Dan Simmons (1948-2026)
Born in Illinois in 1948, Dan Simmons grew up in various cities and small towns across the Midwest. He earned a BA in English from Wabash College in 1970, receiving a national Phi Beta Kappa Award in his senior year for his achievements in fiction, journalism, and art.
His first published story appeared in 1982, the same day his daughter was born, a coincidence he often cited as a reminder of the balance between writing and life. Simmons transitioned to full-time writing in 1987.
He was a versatile author whose work crossed multiple genres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, suspense, historical fiction, noir crime fiction, and mainstream literary fiction. Dan Simmons garnered numerous accolades, such as the Hugo Award, the World Fantasy Award for his debut novel Song of Kali (1985), and the Bram Stoker Award.
