Jane Austen
Jane Austen was born in Hampshire in 1775. Best known for her six highly-acclaimed - and enduringly popular - novels, she was also a respected, witty and insightful poet. Her poems, like her novels, often reflect the themes of a woman’s dependence on marriage in order to secure a settled future although she herself never married and as such was an independent woman. Much of her work was originally published anonymously, so her widespread fame came largely after her death in 1817.
