Helen McCloy
Helen McCloy was born in New York City in 1904. Her father was a writer, and her mother was a newspaper editor.
After reading Sherlock Holmes as a child, McCloy developed a lifelong interest in mysteries. She began writing them in the 1930s, following a career in journalism. Her debut novel, Dance of Death, was published in 1938. It introduced Dr. Basil Willing, a psychologist sleuth who featured in twelve of her novels and several short stories.
In 1950, McCloy became the first woman to serve as president of Mystery Writers of America. In 1953, she received an Edgar Award from the same organization for her critiques. Her final book featuring Dr. Basil Willing was published in 1980. Helen McCloy died in 1994.
