About The Author
Martin Handford
Martin Handford spent much of his childhood drawing, influenced by cinema epics and playing with toy soldiers. At art college, he drew “busy and militarily correct battle scenes,” leading to a career as a freelance illustrator specializing in crowd scenes. Martin draws inspiration from films, museums, art galleries, comics, books, and collecting ephemera. He’s fascinated by crowds, their vibes, patterns, details, and especially humor. “I love their movement and energy.” Through meticulous research and his own ideas, he creates astonishing scenes, each taking months to draw. “As I work my way through a picture, I add Wally when I come to what I feel is a good place to hide him,” he explains.
