Born Frank Morrison Spillane in Brooklyn, New York City, Mickey Spillane started writing while in high school. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, becoming a fighter pilot and instructor. After the war, he moved to South Carolina.
He was married three times and had four children and two stepchildren. His first wife was Mary Ann Pearce, and his third wife was Jane Rogers Johnson.
Spillane wrote his first novel, I, the Jury (1947), to fund the purchase of a house for himself and his first wife. The novel sold six and a half million copies in the United States and introduced his most famous character, the hardboiled private investigator Mike Hammer. His subsequent novels were immediate bestsellers, leading to seven of his titles appearing on the US all-time fiction bestseller list by 1980. Internationally, over 225 million copies of his books have been sold.
Critics generally disliked his work due to its high content of sex and violence. However, he later received praise from American mystery writers Max Alan Collins and William L. DeAndrea, as well as artist Markus Lupertz. Novelist Ayn Rand, a friend of Spillane’s, appreciated the black-and-white morality depicted in his books.
Spillane was an active Jehovah’s Witness. He died in 2006.
