About The Author

Harriet Jacobs

Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813-1897) was born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina, to Daniel Jacobs and Delilah. Raised by her mother until Delilah’s death around 1819, Jacobs was then taken in by her mother’s mistress, Margaret Horniblow. Under Horniblow’s care, Jacobs learned to sew, read, and write. After Horniblow’s death, Jacobs escaped slavery and settled in Rochester, New York, a hub of abolitionist activity. It was there that she wrote her seminal autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.
