Pauline Hopkins
Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins (1859-1930)
Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins is best known for her four novels and numerous short stories, published between 1900 and 1903. Her most famous work, Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South, was published in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900.
Hopkins also published three serialized novels in the Colored American Magazine, where she served as editor. The last of these serialized novels was Of One Blood; Or, The Hidden Self.
Through her editorial work, fiction, and a significant body of nonfiction, Hopkins established herself as a leading public intellectual of her time.
