Richard Corben
Richard Corben was born in Missouri and grew up in Sunflower, Kansas. He drew comics throughout his life, beginning with a series about his family dog and later creating imitations of Tarzan and Brothers of the Spear. He also developed an interest in animation, creating flipbooks and, while attending the Kansas City Art Institute, producing a five-minute animated film as his senior project.
After graduating, Corben worked for an industrial film company as an artist, animator, and cameraman. He also began drawing underground comix and fanzines in his spare time. This led to him drawing stories for Warren Publishing’s black-and-white horror magazines, Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella. He eventually quit his full-time job to focus on his comic art career.
Corben’s fantasy character, Den, was first created for the American underground comic Grim Wit, then reprinted in the French Metal Hurlant and the American Heavy Metal. He and his wife, Dona, started Fantagor Press to publish his comics. Later, Corben worked for various American comic publishers, including D.C., Marvel, and Dark Horse.
Throughout his career, Corben continued to attend life drawing classes to maintain his skills. His interest in animation persisted, leading him to create digital animated movies.
Richard Corben was married to Dona for 56 years and was the father of watercolor artist and comic book colorist, Beth. He passed away on December 2, 2020.
