Hermione Ranfurly, Countess of Ranfurly
Hermione Llewellyn, born in 1913, experienced a privileged early life until her family’s fortune was lost when she was 13. At 24, she moved to Australia and became the personal assistant to the Governor of New South Wales, where she met her husband, Daniel Knox, 6th Earl of Ranfurly.
During World War II, Lady Ranfurly defied convention by joining her husband in the Middle East. Over six years, she held various positions and interacted with notable figures, including Churchill, the kings of Greece, Egypt, and Yugoslavia, as well as writers like Noel Coward and Evelyn Waugh. Her memoir, To War with Whitaker, drew from her wartime diaries.
Following the war, Lord Ranfurly became Governor of the Bahamas. Lady Ranfurly focused on supplying local schools and libraries with books. Upon returning to London, she continued this effort, which grew into Book Aid International, an organization that has since sent over 32 million books to libraries worldwide.
