Henry James (1843-1916) was the younger brother of psychologist William James and is considered one of the greatest American writers. Born in New York, he spent most of his life in England. His notable works include The Portrait of a Lady, The Turn of the Screw, and The Wings of the Dove. New York Review Classics has also published his novels The Other House, The Outcry, and The Ivory Tower, as well as The New York Stories of Henry James.

Colm Tóibín is the author of five novels, including The Story of the Night, The Blackwater Lightship, and The Heather Blazing. His novel The Master, inspired by the life of Henry James, was published in 2004, shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and won the Los Angeles Times Novel of the Year Award in 2005 and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger in France. His nonfiction works include Bad Blood: A Walk Along the Irish Border, Homage to Barcelona, The Sign of the Cross: Travels in Catholic Europe, and Love in a Dark Time. In 2004, his first play, Beauty in a Broken Place, was produced in Dublin, where he resides.
