Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) is celebrated as the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He initially pursued a career in medicine, earning a degree before dedicating himself to manga, a medium then primarily considered for children. His early seminal works include the series known in the United States as Astro Boy. Through his expansive vision, intricate storytelling, keen understanding of power dynamics, and unwavering commitment to human dignity, Tezuka transformed manga into a legitimate art form. In his later career, as the author of Buddha, Tezuka recognized and catered to the increasingly mature readership that manga had cultivated since the 1960s, a trend that has continued to grow. Often referred to as the Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka remains a quintessential figure of the twentieth century.
