Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

Born near Portsmouth, Dickens’s father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family relocated to London in 1823, but their financial situation worsened. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking factory when his father was imprisoned for debt, experiences that profoundly shaped the future novelist. In 1833, he began submitting stories to newspapers and magazines. In 1836, he initiated the serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Over the subsequent twenty years, Dickens released his major novels, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also served as editor for the journals Household Words and All the Year Round.

E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776–1822)

Hoffmann was a writer, composer, and painter. Born in Prussia, he worked as a law officer until Napoleon’s invasion. Following this, he settled in Germany and dedicated himself to the arts. He is most renowned for his contributions to Romanticism and Gothic Horror literature, and for his novella originally titled Nutcracker and Mouse King, which later served as inspiration for Tchaikovsky’s ballet.
