Octavia E. Butler
Octavia Estelle Butler (June 22, 1947 – February 24, 2006) was a visionary science fiction writer. As one of the first African American women in the genre, Butler’s novels explored themes of racial conflict, climate change, sexual and gender identity, women’s rights, and political disparity.
Butler received numerous accolades for her work, including the Nebula Award, Hugo Award, Locus Award for Best Novelette, a PEN Lifetime Achievement Award, and the City College of New York’s Langston Hughes Medal in 2005. In 1995, she was awarded the prestigious MacArthur “Genius” Grant, making her the only science fiction writer to receive this honor.
The New York Times recognized Butler for laying the groundwork for the Afrofuturist movement before the term even existed.
