Sanlé Sory

Sanlé Sory (born 1943) is a Burkinabé photographer. In 1960, the same year Burkina Faso gained independence, Sory founded Volta Photo Portrait Studio. For over three decades, he documented life in Bobo, creating a vibrant record of its people and West African culture.

Florent Mazzoleni is a French author and producer specializing in West African music. He has collaborated with Sanlé Sory for over a decade, bringing Sory’s work to an international audience.

Dr. Taous R. Dahmani is a London-based art historian specializing in photography. She has curated international exhibitions and her writing has been published in numerous photobooks and journals. She is the associate editor of “Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain.”

Hiroshi Egaitsu is a DJ, writer, and lecturer based in Tokyo and Koyo. He is a pioneer of Tokyo’s 1990s DJ scene and lectures at Kyoto Seika University and Tokyo University of the Arts.

Charlotte Flint is a curator and writer based in London and a senior editor at Phaidon Press. Her book “Tee A. Corinne: A forest fire between us” was shortlisted for major photography book awards.

Esther Hien is a French-Burkinabè curator, archivist, ceramicist, and founder of Wä Dé, an online platform focused on West Africa. Her work explores African aesthetics, fashion, visual culture, and cultural preservation.

David Hill studied photography and previously dealt in cameras before a career in the music industry. In 2015, he opened a photography gallery that became known for showcasing previously unseen works. In 2017, his gallery first exhibited Sanlé Sory’s photographs, leading to international acclaim. He is the Photography Editor of “Now Voyager” magazine.

Nicolas Niarchos is a freelance journalist whose work has been published by major publications.

Aurélia Niat Toundji is a curator, researcher, and art director focusing on African and Black contemporary visual culture, art, and style.
