Joyce Cary
Joyce Cary (1888-1957)
Born in Northern Ireland, Joyce Cary spent his formative years in London. He pursued artistic studies in Edinburgh and Paris before embarking on legal studies at Oxford University. In 1913, he joined the Nigerian political service and served in the Nigeria Regiment during the First World War. He returned to Oxford in 1920. A prolific writer across genres, Cary is celebrated for his novels, particularly Mister Johnson and The Horse’s Mouth.
