George Herbert

Herbert was born on April 3 in Montgomery, Wales, the fifth son of Richard and Magdalen Herbert. He attended Westminster School and then matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was elected major fellow of Trinity College and later appointed Reader in Rhetoric at Cambridge. He served as Public Orator at Cambridge. Herbert was elected to represent Montgomery in Parliament. He was presented to a prebend in Huntingdonshire and later instituted to the rectory at Bemerton near Salisbury, where he was ordained priest. He married Jane Danvers. Herbert died of consumption just before his fortieth birthday.
