About The Author

John Muir

John Muir (1838-1914)

Born in Scotland, John Muir emigrated with his family to the United States in 1849. He later enrolled in courses in chemistry, geology, and botany at the University of Wisconsin. Muir embarked on extensive journeys across America, scientifically and enthusiastically observing the wilderness.

His first book, The Mountains of California, was published in 1894. Settling in California, Muir became a passionate leader of the forest conservation movement.
