Critics Review

Christina’s illustrations made me feel that I was lying on the sand bring the desert animals up close to my nose. An animal’s shadow in the picture gives a clue to what animal will be on the next page. The colours of the landscape – red, blue, violet and brown – remind me of an Albert Namatjira watercolour painting.

For the more inquisitive mind Angie has included an information page of interesting little facts like, “The Greater Bilby swallows a large amount of soil along with its food”.

This story is a celebration of wildlife in the Australian desert. Plus there is the cutest little surprise at the end.

About The Author

Angie Lionetto-Civa

Angie Lionetto-Civa lives in Perth with her husband, two children, her singing bird Jack, her dancing bird Oscar, her territorial cat Licorice, her adopted cat Whisky, and her three chooks. Her passions include teaching children, writing books, reading autobiographies, catching up with her friends, and walking.

Christina Booth works from her home-based studio in Tasmania, surrounded by her garden, family, and pets. She is inspired by the natural environment, and even though she lives a long way from the desert, she finds that a book, a pencil, and her imagination are all she needs to be transported there. Christina is the author and illustrator of several books, including her most recent, Kip.

Angie and Christina have previously collaborated on two books, In the Deep Green Jungle and In the Deep Blue Sea, both of which were notable books in the CBC Book of the Year Awards.
