Summary

For months, even years, families waited for news of those believed lost at sea. The truth was even more extraordinary.

In April 1942, the British tramp steamer SS Willesden was crossing the South Atlantic with vital war supplies bound for Britain’s 8th Army in North Africa when she was attacked by the German raider KMS Thor. Shelled, torpedoed and set ablaze, the Willesden sank with five of her crew. Among the badly wounded survivors was Second Mate David Millar.

About The Author

Andy Millar

Andy Millar served for forty years with the Royal New Zealand Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. Following the death of his father, David Millar, he discovered a hidden carton of documents, letters and photographs that revealed the wartime story his father had rarely spoken of. Drawing on those papers, survivor interviews, public records and his own naval experience, Andy reconstructed the extraordinary true story of the prisoners taken at sea and held in Fukushima. Andy Millar passed away before this new edition was published, leaving behind a deeply personal and important work of naval history.
