About The Author

Rumiko Takahashi

Rumiko Takahashi’s career began in 1978 when she won an honorable mention in Shogakukan’s New Comic Artist Contest for Those Selfish Aliens. Later that year, her boy-meets-alien comedy series, Urusei Yatsura, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This phenomenally successful manga series was adapted into anime format and spawned a TV series and several theatrical movies, all popular in their own right.

Takahashi followed up the success of her debut series with one blockbuster hit after another:

  • Maison Ikkoku (1980–1987)
  • Ranma 1⁄2 (1987–1996)
  • Inuyasha (1996–2008)

Other notable works include Mermaid Saga, Rumic Theater, and One-Pound Gospel.

Takahashi was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame in 2018. She won the Shogakukan Manga Award twice: for Urusei Yatsura in 1981 and for Inuyasha in 2002.

A majority of Takahashi’s work has been adapted into other media, including anime, live-action TV series, and film. Her manga, as well as the adaptations, continue to delight generations of fans worldwide. Distinguished by her endearing characters, Takahashi’s work adeptly incorporates comedy, romance, fantasy, and martial arts. While her series defy simple genre categorization, her signature style is known as the “Rumic World.” Rumiko Takahashi represents the best of the manga world.
