What They're Saying

Critics Review

“The characters have redeeming qualities and realistic flaws, the plot develops swiftly, and the balance between dialogue and inner reflections is strong. Tactfully and engagingly examines emotional crises through a lens of humor.”Kirkus Reviews

“Earnest dialogue probes questions about the intersection of gender, sexuality, and mental health. This is a candid exploration of the truth behind comedy and laughter’s ability to heal.”—Publishers Weekly

“An intriguing, if at times didactic, meditation on gender roles, sexuality, identity, and authenticity.”—School Library Journal

★”Sean’s relationships with the supporting cast inform his journey while allowing them their own plots and agency, and depictions of self-injury are relayed with candor as Sean comes to better understand his mental health. This earnest coming-of-age story will resonate with any teen in search of their true self.” —Booklist, starred review
