Critics Review
“Sustainable travel, authentic slow tourism and support of local infrastructure are pillars of [Moon’s] ethos: if that aligns with you as a curious traveller, their guides are a must-buy.”–Italia! Magazine
“Far from narrow minded, each Moon travel guide gives itinerary options for a variety of travelers’ budgets–from frugal to lavish. They make books catering to those who love the outdoors, those who have limited time, those staying exclusively in cities and those who’ve fully committed to living abroad. In all, they have hundreds of titles, ranging Bermuda to Budapest, that’ll teach you to embrace a new culture.”–Gear Patrol, “The Best Travel Guidebooks for Every Journey”
“Moon guides are perfect for the relaxed road tripper or outdoor explorer.”–No Small Plan
“Moon handbooks are always a pleasure to read. The writing is crisp, the research impressive, and the recommendations practical and down to earth.”–Chicago Tribune
“Moon handbooks are known for cannily combining logistical information with cultural background of a country or state.”–Los Angeles Times
“Moon handbooks have become known as well-written and exceptionally informative guides.”–The New York Times
“The books are more easily readable than other guides. The main attractions are also marked with a special icon and sidebars and boxes highlight special information, making the Moon handbooks one of the most user-friendly guides in terms of visual appeal and organization…the quality is uniformly excellent.”–Transitions Abroad
Andrew Hempstead
Andrew Hempstead has kayaked around Bowen Island, enjoyed powder days at Whistler Blackcomb, savored pancakes at the Elbow Room, joined the midday crowds at Butchart Gardens, and surfed on the west coast. He engages in these activities not merely for guidebook research, but because he genuinely loves Vancouver and Victoria. These diverse experiences, combined with a profound respect for nature and a keen interest in local history, have been instrumental in his creation of Moon Victoria & Vancouver Island.
Andrew dedicates as much time as possible to traveling. Rather than adhering to pre-planned itineraries from local tourism offices, he travels incognito. This allows him to experience the varied delights of Vancouver and Victoria in the same way his readers do.
Since the early 1990s, Andrew has authored and updated over 60 guidebooks. He has also contributed to numerous major magazines, supplied content for online clients, and worked as a corporate writer for Parks Canada. His photography has been featured in a wide range of media, from international golf magazines to a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum. Andrew has presented on guidebook writing to national audiences and contributed to a university-level travel writing textbook.
Andrew and his wife, Dianne, own Summerthought Publishing, a regional publisher of nonfiction books. He and his family reside in Banff, Alberta.
