Metal Hurlant

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (1938 – 2012) was a French artist, cartoonist, and writer renowned in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées (BD) tradition. He achieved international acclaim primarily under the pseudonym Mœbius for his fantasy and science-fiction works, and to a lesser extent as Gir for his Western-themed creations, most notably the Blueberry series. His imaginative and surreal style influenced countless artists and creators.

As Gir, his most celebrated work is the Blueberry series, co-created with writer Jean-Michel Charlier, which introduced one of the earliest antiheroes in Western comics and is highly regarded in continental Europe.

Under the name Mœbius, he gained worldwide recognition, particularly in English-speaking countries and Japan, with his highly imaginative, surreal, and often abstract science-fiction and fantasy comics, including Arzach and The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius. He also collaborated with filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky on an unproduced adaptation of Dune and the comic series The Incal.

Mœbius contributed storyboards and concept designs to numerous films, such as Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element, and The Abyss. The Blueberry series was adapted into a film in 2004.

Jean-Pierre Dionnet is a French comics writer, born in Paris in 1947. He pursued a career in comics from a young age, working in bookstores and as a broker before beginning his writing career in Pilote in 1971, contributing short stories to artists like Jacques Tardi and Jean Solé. He joined the editorial team of L’Écho des Savanes in 1974 and co-founded the influential magazine Métal Hurlant in 1975 with Bernard Farkas, Philippe Druillet, and Mœbius, serving as its editor-in-chief until 1985.

Dionnet also wrote for artists such as Jean-Claude Gal and Enki Bilal. He transitioned into television but later returned to scriptwriting, including the series Des Dieux et des hommes, which explored a parallel world where gods and humans coexist, collaborating with Laurent Theureau, Roberto Baldazzini, and Mœbius.

Enki Bilal is a French-Yugoslavian comic book writer and artist, best known for The Carnival of Immortals and its sequels. He is also the creator of The Monster’s Tetralogy. Beyond comics, Bilal has directed three films: Bunker Palace Hotel (1989), Tykho Moon (1997), and Immortal (2004), the latter based on his Nikopol Trilogy. He has received significant recognition for his artistic contributions, including being named an Officier des Arts et des Lettres in 2003 and receiving a knighthood in the Ordre National du Mérite in 2010. An asteroid was named in his honor in 2006.
